TMJ / Sleep Apnoea

TMJ

Are you having difficulty getting a good night’s sleep? You could have sleep apnoea.

Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, gasping for air? Is loud snoring causing problems for you and your partner? If you are experiencing these symptoms, you could have sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea occurs when the muscles in the throat collapse during sleep. This leads to a blockage in the throat airway which can cause absence of breath, snoring, or poor sleep quality.

Who can get sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea can affect both men and women of any age. Because sleep apnoea occurs from blocked airflow in the throat, factors that may increase the risk of getting sleep apnoea include being overweight and having a narrow throat or large tonsils.

Is sleep apnoea dangerous?

Quality sleep is essential for good health. We need it to reset the mind and body from the day’s stress and is important for cellular repair. When our sleep quality deteriorates, this can result in irritability and forgetfulness, daytime fatigue, impaired cognitive ability, and poor cardiovascular health.

Snoring and sleep apnoea treatment

While snoring is not necessarily a risk in itself, it can signify an underlying health condition and can affect our sleep quality and that of our partner’s. Inserting an oral appliance or a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) while sleeping can remove or decrease snoring symptoms immediately.

Effective treatment options for sleep apnoea are surgery, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), and insertion of an MAS. All these help open up the airway and increase airflow while sleeping.
