Cosmetic Dentistry - Inlays and Onlays

What are cosmetic inlays and onlays?

When cavities are too big for regular fillings to treat, cosmetic inlays and onlays are used. Cosmetic inlays and onlays are tooth restorations usually made of ceramic that fit into your teeth to seal in cavities.

Inlays and Onlays

What is the difference between an inlay and onlay?

An inlay is typically used for the inside of the tooth. An onlay, on the other hand, is usually used on the tooth’s exterior and when the cavity is broad and shallow.

How is it done?

STEP 1

We will thoroughly clean your tooth of decay and remove any residual debris from old fillings if there are any.

STEP 2

We will clean and shape your tooth so the inlay or onlay can bond seamlessly to it. This step prepares your tooth for the fitting of the inlay or onlay.

STEP 3

A mould or impression of your teeth is taken using putty. An impression of the teeth opposite the teeth to be restored will also be taken to know the form of your bite.

STEP 4

While the impression is sent to the laboratory for fabrication, a temporary restoration will be put in place of the inlay or onlay to protect your tooth.

STEP 5

When the inlay or onlay is ready, this will be fitted into or onto the tooth. Fabrication of your custom inlay or onlay can take up to two weeks.
